Can an Existing Water Feature Be Repaired or Is It Better to Rebuild It?
If you have recently moved into a new home, you may have inherited an old pond, garden stream, waterfall or water feature that was never completed. It is something we are asked about surprisingly often.
Sometimes a previous owner has started building a waterfall or stream before moving house. Other times, an old water feature has stopped working, the pump has been removed, or the feature has simply been left unfinished for years. The first question many homeowners ask is: "Can it be repaired, or is it better to start again?" The answer depends on what is already there.
What We Look For
Before recommending any repairs, we need to establish exactly what has been installed. This includes checking:
- • Is there a pond liner beneath the rocks?
- • Is there a hidden reservoir?
- • Has any pipework already been installed?
- • Is there a pump or filtration system?
- • Is the existing stonework suitable for flowing water?
From the surface, an unfinished waterfall or stream may look close to completion, but many of the important components are hidden underground.
When a Rebuild Makes More Sense
In many cases, rebuilding from scratch is actually the better option. Trying to finish somebody else’s project can sometimes cost more in the long run than creating a new feature designed correctly from the beginning.
A professionally built garden waterfall, stream, water feature or pondless waterfall should be designed so that water flows naturally over every rock, with hidden filtration, reliable pumps and easy access for future maintenance. Starting again also allows us to create a much more natural appearance using carefully selected stone and proven construction methods.
